  • My Statement on the Passing of Elijah Cummings

    Today, we lost a true American patriot and a fierce champion of the voiceless.

    Elijah dedicated his life to public service, working every single day to improve education, health care and economic opportunity — not only in Baltimore, but across Maryland and for the entire country. 

    Elijah was a mentor and close friend. I am devastated by his passing. My deepest sympathies go out to Elijah’s wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Elijah’s family and friends and all those who have been graced by Elijah's life of service.

    We will keep his memory alive.

John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and House Democrats to introduce the Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for a Lasting Democracy (SHIELD) Act, a bill to combat foreign interference in American elections. The SHIELD Act (H.R. 4617) will close loopholes that allow foreign spending in our elections, boost disclosure and transparency requirements and create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign nations or governments.

Brown (all D-Md.), to announce a recent award of more than $8,549,000 in federal funding for Anne Arundel County through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. These funds will enable the county to hire additional career firefighters.
