Sarbanes Calls on Trump Administration to Identify Unknown Law Enforcement Officers Operating in Washington, D.C.

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today joined more than 120 Members of Congress in demanding answers from Attorney General William Barr about the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) deployment of unidentifiable law enforcement officers in Washington, D.C. amid the national protests against police brutality and racial injustice in America.
Numerous reports have found that DOJ law enforcement officers are policing the nation’s capital without carrying name plates, official insignia or agency markings on their uniforms.

Sarbanes, Maryland Congressional Delegation Announce Nearly $35 Million in COVID-19 Relief for Marylanders Experiencing Homelessness

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Maryland Congressional Delegation today announced $34,985,870 in COVID-19 relief to help individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Funding comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. It will be used to support homeless assistance and eviction prevention assistance for families and individuals who are newly experiencing homelessness as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eviction prevention activities include rapid rehousing, housing counseling and rental deposit assistance.

Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) to introduce the Periodically Listing Updates to Management Act of 2020 (The PLUM Act), a bill to increase transparency of senior leaders in the Executive Branch. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) introduced the Senate companion bill.

“Never again should the world be subjected to witnessing what we saw on the streets of Minneapolis: the slow murder of an individual by a uniformed police officer,” said Rep. Karen Bass, a California Democrat and the leader of the Congressional Black Caucus, at a news conference announcing the effort.

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Members of the Maryland Congressional Delegation today announced $618,628 to expand telehealth services for residents in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County.
Funding comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. It will be delivered to CCI Health and Wellness Services in Silver Spring to ensure the continuation of high-quality primary, pediatric and behavioral health care services for more than 33,000 patients quarantined at home.

Governors Warn Congress More Federal Help Is Needed to Avoid COVID-19 Resurgence
Allison Winter, Maryland MattersThe federal government needs to assist states with a national strategy for distribution of COVID-19 tests and medical equipment or risk a second surge of the disease, Democratic governors told lawmakers Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis asked Congress for more federal help as states try to track and monitor the disease and brace for its confluence with the flu and cold season next fall.

Sarbanes, Baltimore Congressional Delegation Announce Nearly $3 Million for Zero-Emission Buses

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Baltimore Congressional Delegation today announced $2,949,750 for the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) to expand Baltimore’s fleet of zero-emission buses.
Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) FY 2020 Low- or No-Emission Vehicle Program (Low-No). It will help Baltimore City transition to a clean bus fleet by purchasing three new zero-emission buses and charging equipment.

Sarbanes, Maryland Congressional Delegation Urge Governor Hogan to Unveil COVID-19 Testing Plan

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Maryland Congressional Delegation today urged Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) to publicly release his plan to use $205 million in federal funding secured by the Delegation to ramp up COVID-19 testing across the state.
The Governor is required to submit the plan to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by Saturday, May 30.

Sarbanes, Baltimore Congressional Delegation Announce $8 Million in Federal Funding for Amtrak

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Baltimore Congressional Delegation today announced $8 million in federal funding to upgrade Amtrak’s primary line in Baltimore, a critical hub for commuters and travelers.
Funding comes from the 2019 Federal-State Partnership for the State of Good Repair Program and follows a strong push by the Baltimore Delegation to support this project.

$8M federal grant to help reduce bottlenecks for Baltimore train commuters
Ethan McLeod, Baltimore Business JournalA project to increase speeds for Amtrak and MARC trains currently slowed by aging rail infrastructure in Baltimore is getting a boost from an $8 million Federal Railroad Administration grant.
The money, announced Wednesday by the agency, will help to rehabilitate and upgrade a five-mile section of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and allow trains to travel 50% faster, up from 60 mph to 90 mph. The improvements will take place between the north end of West Baltimore Station to Winans at the southern end of Halethorpe station, which serves both MARC and Amtrak trains.

Sarbanes, Maryland Congressional Delegation Press Governor Hogan to Address COVID-19 Racial Disparities and Expand Testing

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and the Maryland Congressional Delegation today urged Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to use race and ethnic data to develop a plan to address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color in Maryland.
The Members also asked the Governor to lay out his plans to expand testing throughout Maryland, especially by tapping community-based organizations.
