Sarbanes Votes to Advance the Equal Rights Amendment

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after voting to remove the ratification deadline for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and pave the way for the ERA to become the 28th Amendment:

“Today’s historic vote brings us one step closer to guaranteeing equal rights for women under the U.S. Constitution. Our existing patchwork of civil rights law allows discrimination against women – including pay disparities, workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, domestic violence and restrictions on reproductive rights – to persist. By advancing the ERA, we can tear down another layer of inequality in our country and continue the long march for women’s rights and justice in America.”
