Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III delivered public remarks about his report into Russian interference in the 2016 election:
“Special Counsel Mueller clearly and directly stated that, ‘There were multiple, systematic efforts to interfere in our election and that allegation deserves the attention of every American.’
“These attacks on our democratic process not only require our attention – they also require action. Congress must move quickly to secure our democracy and protect the integrity of the vote ahead of the 2020 election. And House Democrats stand ready to act.
“In March, we passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which included a comprehensive suite of election security reforms to protect the ballot box from cyber threats, stymie foreign disinformation campaigns and close loopholes that allow foreign governments to intrude in our democracy. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must heed the warnings of the Special Counsel and our nation’s intelligence community by taking up and passing these critical reforms. Failing to protect America against these serious and ongoing threats would be a grave mistake.”
